In what could prove to be an enjoyable Premier Division affair from the Showgrounds on Friday night, Sligo Rovers will welcome St. Patrick’s to town.
Starting with the hosts, missing out on what they would have billed as an opportunity away at Drogheda last week as they eventually had to settle for an action-packed 2-2 stalemate, Sligo are certainly seeking some much-needed stability. Almost sat in Premier Division limbo and knowing that they need a minor miracle in their bid to clinch a top-half finish this season, the Rovers have managed to muster just a pair of wins from any of their last nine domestic appearances across all formats a run that stems back to May 27th. However, despite their extended defensive issues over the past couple of months, John Russell’s men have continued to shine on home soil. Last seen at the Showgrounds putting in a thumping display as they stormed their way to a 3-0 romp against Cork, Sligo have secured back-to-back Premier Division victories at the Showgrounds by an aggregate score of 6-1.
As for the visitors, while St. Patrick’s might have seen their Europa Conference League qualifying adventure come to an abrupt end last month following a 5-3 aggregate defeats against Luxembourg-based outfit Dudelange, the Saints are enjoying an extended domestic flurry. Last seen extending on their FAI Cup run thanks to a 2-1 win against Longford, Jon Daly’s men have lost just one of their previous 10 straight domestic showdowns a run that stems all the way back to a 3-2 loss against Shamrock Rovers on May 15th. With that run highlighted by a stellar 7-0 romp against UC Dublin, the Reds find themselves sat in pole position to claim a silver medal finish in 2023. Enjoying a rich run of form in the final third, neutrals could be treated to an enjoyable affair here. With St. Patrick’s seeing eight of their last nine matchups finish with over 1.5 goals, we are expecting a similar outcome this weekend.
