NFC West bragging rights are on the line tonight when the division-leading Seattle Seahawks host the San Francisco 49ers in primetime.

Seattle is still licking its wounds from a bitter 29-20 home loss to the New York Giants on Sunday, and enter this evening’s game as 3.5-point underdogs.

The Niners, meanwhile, are reeling from a heartbreaking 1-point loss to the Arizona Cardinals and are still trying to find their groove while playing without star running back Christian McCaffrey, who remains out with Achilles tendinitis.

Today FIFA announced that they are formally moving ahead with plans to host the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in November and December of that year, with the final being played a week before Christmas. Reports in Argentina claim Marcelo Bielsa is close to agreeing a new two-year deal with Leeds and, although he has countered that “the information is not real”, there is growing optimism at Elland Road that the manager will renew a contract set to expire in June. Bielsa’s meeting with Jürgen Klopp should be intriguing. How will Liverpool’s manager – not to mention players – respond after Wednesday night’s Champions League exit to Real Madrid? Manchester United’s second win against one of Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City, and first away win against any of the traditional top three, was significant. The 3-2 defeat of Arsenal at the Emirates spoke to a real shift in the resilience of Marc Skinner’s side. Having taken the lead, United’s collapse early in the second half, conceding twice, looked to be following a familiar pattern. Manchester United will start a £50m revamp of the men’s first-team ­building at their Carrington training complex next week, with ­Ratcliffe believing this will transform it into a “world-class” facility and improve performance. The project, led by the renowned architect Norman Foster, starts on Monday and is expected to continue throughout next season.

The Vegas Golden Knights have surprisingly emerged as one of the NHL’s more fun teams in the opening portion of the season, and winger Pierre-Édouard Bellemare gave them another great moment in the first period tonight against Montreal. Bellemare started with his back to the net, spun away from one defender, then went between the legs of poor Jeff Petry. He finished off the sequence with a little move to his left away from Joe Morrow that let him slip the puck past Charlie Lindgren. A week after the NCAA denied Braxton Beverly’s appeal to play for N.C. State this season, the freshman point guard has shared his perspective on the whole debacle in an essay. This is the first time that Beverly’s discussed his ordeal at length since it began. After enrolling in summer classes at Ohio State as a member of the freshman recruiting class under former head coach Thad Matta, he decided to ask for his release shortly after Matta was fired in June. Once his release was granted, he chose to play for N.C. State instead.
